The Formation of the LHS

Local history societies have existed in many of the towns and villages of Lancashire and Merseyside, and in various localities within the Liverpool conurbation for several years, but until the year 2000, there appeared to be no society in existence that was committed to the study of the history of the City of Liverpool itself.

When a meeting was held in Liverpool Central Library in November 2000 to assess the potential support for such a society, well over 60 people attended, and much positive interest was shown.   An ad hoc committee was therefore set up to explore this proposal further, produce a draft constitution, and report back.

On 18th February 2001, a further meeting took the formal decision to establish a society committed to the appreciation and study of the  history of the city which would complement, rather than compete with the work of existing groups, and with the draft constitution duly adopted, and 38 founder members enrolled, the new LIVERPOOL History  SOCIETY was born .

Progress & the future

Since then, the Society has grown to a membership of almost 200, and has been granted Registered Charity status. It has  held regular meetings and visits with attendances often exceeding 70, published 18 newsletters, and six annual Journals, and, to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, a volume of members' memories.   Further details of these publications, copies of some of which are still available, can be found elsewhere on this website, as can the programme of talks for the current year.

We are also working with the Liverpool Cultural Heritage Forum as it seeks to co-ordinate and publicise the activities of other local history and cultural societies in the Merseyside area.

Whether you are a "Scouser", a "Liverpudlian" or a "Liverpolitan" born & bred, a "Red" or a "Blue", a long-time resident, a newcomer from elsewhere in the UK or overseas, or just a visitor to the area, if you have an interest in, or want to find out more about the fascinating history of Liverpool and its people.
