The
Formation of the LHS Local history societies have existed in many of the
towns and villages of Lancashire and Merseyside, and in various localities
within the Liverpool conurbation for several years, but until the year 2000,
there appeared to be no society in existence that was committed to the study
of the history of the City of Liverpool itself. When a meeting was held in Liverpool Central Library
in November 2000 to assess the potential support for such a society, well
over 60 people attended, and much positive interest was shown. An ad hoc
committee was therefore set up to explore this proposal further, produce a
draft constitution, and report back. On 18th February 2001, a further meeting took the
formal decision to establish a society committed to the appreciation and
study of the history of the city which
would complement, rather than compete with the work of existing groups, and
with the draft constitution duly adopted, and 38 founder members enrolled,
the new LIVERPOOL HlSTORY SOCIETY was born . Progress
& the future Since then, the Society has grown to a membership of
almost 200, and has been granted Registered Charity status. It has held regular meetings and visits with
attendances often exceeding 70, published 18 newsletters, and six annual
Journals, and, to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, a
volume of members' memories. Further
details of these publications, copies of some of which are still available,
can be found elsewhere on this website, as can the programme of talks for the
current year. This year, our City celebrates the 800th Anniversary
of the granting of Liverpool's "Letters Patent" by King John in
1207 and, next year, 2008 sees its European Capital of Culture festivities.
The Society is actively planning our Meetings and Publications programmes for
those years We are also working with the
Liverpool
Heritage Forum as it seeks to
co-ordinate and publicise the activities of other local history and cultural
societies in the Merseyside area Whether you are a "Scouser", a
"Liverpudlian" or a "Liverpolitan" born & bred, a
"Red" or a "Blue", a long-time resident, a newcomer from
elsewhere in the UK or overseas, or just a visitor to the area, if you have
an interest in, or want to find out more about the fascinating history of
Liverpool and its people. Why not
join us at a future meeting ? Attend
the first meeting FREE subsequent meetings only £1 admission |
